The Nightlife piece by Alejandro Otaola photographed by Sean Patrick Waters

Nightlife.

About

An interesting exciting piece in explore world of abstract expressionism, the work features an interesting experiment of a new artist wondering NYC. In this piece, I had an urge to approach the idea of accessing memories. I wanted to create a visual collage which captured the essence of a particular night out in NYC. Passing through popular Brooklyn spots like The Good Room, Bossanova, and others whose names fade from memory, I made it a point to record everything from sunset to sunrise, simply on my phone, whatever attracted my attention.

the days following, I wanted to track down moments from the night which stood out, simple frames frozen in my head, before looking at any recordings for details, context etc.

the result of a this night out landed in a painting with the texture of torn ads & posters that line the streets between nightclubs and 24hour delis, as well as the color palate of the night sky, club lights and vague memories of faces & feelings.
